Hong Kong and Macao are parts of China's territory. The Chinese government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on July 1, 1997, and established the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. On December 20, 1999, the exercise of sovereignty over Macao was resumed and the Macao Special Administrative Region was established.
